Ponce Coat of Arms

Volunteer Information

Ponce Coat of Arms

This is a volunteer project to transcribe parts of the Ponce PR 1920 U.S. Federal Census for free access by everyone on the World Wide Net.

Only the most important parts of the original records will be transcribed. This will be enough to allow interested persons to recognize individuals and family group. This will also make it easier for the person doing the research to quickly find the full information in the original census documents.

Transcribing the data from a CD or Microfilm is not always easy. The original records were hand written, so you have to contend with different styles of writing. Often, the records are blurred or faded. Transcribing a census record requires dedication and attention to detail, and …..TIME.

A volunteer transcriber is someone who has an interest in genealogy and willingly gives time and energy, selflessly shares, and takes great pleasure from doing so.

Between you and I, we will determine the best format to use for the actual transcribing. To do this, we will need to know a little about you, your computer equipment, your areas of interest if any, and your over-all knowledge of computing. Our knowing how much YOU know will help us to help YOU to succeed.

Normally, we do not have the material (CD or Film) to lend or give away. It would be simply too costly and there are no funds available. We will, however work with you as much as possible to make this a very enjoyable experience.

Technical Support

We will troubleshoot for our volunteers, answer your questions and support your your work. If you have a question, contact us and we will try our very best to resolve it for you.

The next pages will discuss sources for free, loan or purchase of the CDs/Films you will need to begin your volunteer experience. We will also discuss the do's and don'ts of transcribing. We have included a "nuts and bolts" section that will demonstrate how to work with the required documents themselves.

Thank you for your welcomed interest in this very worthy project!
